State is the memory of your application — and as an app grows, keeping that memory consistent across components is one of the hardest problems in frontend development. This guide explains what state actually is, how the modern solutions work, and how to choose between them without over-engineering.

What state means in practice

State is any information your app needs to remember: the logged-in user, the value of a form input, the items in a cart, data returned from an API, or which menu is open. The challenge isn't storing it — it's keeping every component that displays that information in sync with it.

The Flux foundation

The Flux architecture, introduced by Facebook, laid the foundation for modern state management with a strict unidirectional data flow: actions describe what happened, a dispatcher routes them, stores hold the state, and views re-render from it. This single direction makes state changes predictable and debuggable — when something is wrong, you can trace exactly how it got that way.

React: Redux and beyond

Redux formalises Flux into a predictable container with a single store and pure reducer functions. It's verbose, but that verbosity buys testability and time-travel debugging. For most new React apps, though, the built-in tools — useState for local state, useReducer for complex transitions, and the Context API for shared data — cover a surprising amount before you need Redux at all.

Vue: Pinia

Pinia is Vue's modern store: minimal API, type-safe, and built on Vue's reactivity system. It replaced Vuex as the recommended approach because it's dramatically simpler to use and naturally supports TypeScript and code splitting.

Angular: NgRx with RxJS

Angular teams reach for NgRx, which marries the Redux pattern with RxJS observables. It's powerful for complex, event-driven applications but has a steep learning curve, so Angular apps increasingly use plain services with signals for simpler needs.

Choosing the right tool

  • Local-only state stays in the component — don't lift it up preemptively.
  • Shared server data: start with the framework's built-in data fetching before adding a store.
  • Complex client state shared across many components: reach for Redux, Pinia, or NgRx.
  • The larger the team and the longer the app lives, the more value a structured store provides.

Advanced patterns worth learning

Modularising state — splitting a giant store into focused slices or domains — is the biggest maintainability win. Decoupling logic from components (selectors, pure reducers, service layers) makes state testable in isolation. And memoised selectors, whether Reselect, Pinia getters, or NgRx selectors, stop needless re-renders as data changes.

A pragmatic conclusion

The best state management is the least you can get away with. Start with built-in primitives, add a structured store only when sharing and predictability actually demand it, and keep logic separated from components so that whatever tool you choose stays a means, not an end.
