Checklist for evaluating an AI development company

India has thousands of companies that now describe themselves as AI developers, from two-person studios to large IT services firms. Most can build an impressive demo. Far fewer can ship an AI system that stays accurate, secure, and affordable once real customers use it. These twelve questions help you tell the difference before you sign anything.

Questions about their experience

  • 1. Can you show an AI system you built that is in production today, and tell me what it measurably changed?
  • 2. Have you built something similar to my use case — support chatbot, document processing, AI agent, prediction model?
  • 3. Who will actually work on my project, and what have they built before?

Look for specifics: ticket deflection rates, hours saved, accuracy on a test set. 'We use the latest AI' is not an answer. Case studies with concrete outcomes, like the ones on our case studies page, are a good sign; vague logos are not.

Questions about how they build

  • 4. How will you measure whether the AI is accurate enough before launch?
  • 5. What happens when the AI doesn't know the answer, or is wrong?
  • 6. Which models will you use, and can we switch providers later without a rebuild?
  • 7. How will my data be stored, and is any of it used to train third-party models?

A serious team will talk about evaluation sets, guardrails, human handover, and model-agnostic architecture without being prompted. If the plan is just 'connect ChatGPT to your website', expect inaccurate answers and rising bills.

Questions about cost and ownership

  • 8. What will this cost to run each month, not just to build?
  • 9. Who owns the source code, prompts, and trained assets when the project ends?
  • 10. What does support and maintenance look like after launch?

Questions about process

  • 11. Can we start with a small, time-boxed pilot before committing to the full build?
  • 12. How often will I see working software, and how do we handle changes in scope?

Short pilots of two to six weeks with a clear success metric protect both sides. They turn a big decision into a small, reversible one, and they show you how the team communicates under real deadlines.

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed accuracy of 100%, or promises that AI will 'replace your whole team'
  • No questions about your data, users, or success metrics in the first conversation
  • A fixed price for a vaguely defined AI project, with no discovery phase
  • Reluctance to put source code ownership in writing

If you are starting out, an AI consulting engagement can turn a broad idea into a scoped, costed plan before any development begins. When you are ready to build, our teams deliver generative AI and RAG chatbots and AI agents for businesses across India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I hire freelancers or an AI development company?

Freelancers can work well for narrow, well-defined tasks. For production systems that need backend, security, evaluation, and ongoing maintenance, a company with a cross-functional team is usually lower risk.

Does the company need to be in my city?

Not necessarily — most AI projects run well remotely. A local partner does make in-person workshops and discovery sessions easier, which helps on larger projects.
